Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic women's tennis picked up its 10th win of the season after defeating Juniata, 5-2, in a Landmark Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals swept all three doubles matches, only allowing a combined four games total, to take an early lead.
Shloka Tambat and
Mairead O'Hara won 6-1 at No. 1,
Paige Brightwell and
Meaghan Laniewski won 6-2 at No. 2, and
Ava Niggemeier and
Ella Knox won 6-1 at No. 3. Brightwell and Laniewski were able to win the final four games after trading the first four games.
In singles play, Catholic added another point before Juniata broke onto the scoreboard to make it 2-1. The Cardinals bounced back to take the match with three consecutive wins. Laniewski fought through a close first set at No. 3 and was able to adapt to win the first-set tiebreak prior to winning the second set comfortably.
Knox played an incredible match, playing three sets to a score of 6-4 and finishing with an overhead winner. She won the first set, dropped the second, and rebounded to secure the third in exciting fashion to extend Catholic's lead.
O'Hara and
Ava Kaloustian finished their respective matches within seconds of each other. O'Hara played an incredibly long first set tiebreak in which she fought off six set points before winning it 16-14. She took the second set easily, 6-2. Similarly, Kaloustain saw a 6-2 second set after winning the first 6-1.
Catholic is back in action on April 5 as the team travels to Lycoming for a 1 p.m. start.
