BALTIMORE, Md. - Catholic traveled to Babb Field on Wednesday night, dropping a midweek tilt with the nation's fourth-ranked team, Johns Hopkns, 9-0.
Hopkins starter Drew Grumbles kept the Cardinals off-balance, allowing just one hit and striking out 10 in 7.1 innings to earn his fourth victory of the season.
Jack Scholz was outstanding for four innings of relief before allowing three runs in his fifth and final inning on the mound. Scholz struck out a career-high seven in relief of
Mac Meara.
Grumbles carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before a
Dante Pozzi single on the left side broke it up with one away, pushing his hit streak to nine games.
Steve Thomas added the team's second hit of the day, singling in the eighth after a
Zach Burton walk to threaten, but reliever Ryan Anderson got
Sammy Burman to bounce out, ending the threat.
Hopkins pushed two across in the first with help from a Catholic error with one run scoring on the throwaway before Shawn Steuerer drove in the second with a double. The Blue Jays scored four in the second thanks to a three-run homer from Steuerer. Scholz shut down the Jays for four innings before Caleb Cyr and Clay Hartje pushed the lead to nine runs.
The 12-8 Cardinals will host Wilkes this weekend in a three-game Landmark Conference series at Joe Cannon Stadium.
