Box Score HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Catholic women's tennis concluded its spring break trip with a match against East Stroudsburg on Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead after earning the doubles point, but could not hang on as the Warriors took home a 5-2 victory.
Catholic claimed back-to-back wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to start.
Meaghan Laniewski and
Alyson Morris combined at No. 3 for a competitive battle. The pair exchanged games with their opponents until they were finally able to separate themselves on a deuce point.
Shloka Tambat and
Mairead O'Hara started strong in their No. 1 doubles match, commanding a 4-1 lead early. Their opponents won the next two games before back-and-forth action forced the score to 5-4 in favor of the Cardinals. Tambat and O'Hara were able to stay calm and controlled to take the last game and secure the opening point.Â
The Cardinals' other point on the day came from
Paige Brightwell. Playing at No. 6 singles, the senior put on a clinical performance to win 6-2, 6-2. She found her rhythm early and stifled any momentum her competitor tried to gain.Â
Laniewski played an incredibly tight singles match at No. 3 as each set was decided by a single break of serve. She came just short of a comeback effort in the first match, failing 4-6, before playing a competitive second set that eneded 3-6.Â
Ava Niggemeier found herself in the tightest match of the day. The sophomore went down to start the first set but was able to stage a comeback effort to force a tiebreak, which she dropped 5-7. In the second set, she took a 5-2 lead before her opponent rallied to force another tiebreak. Niggemeier continued to battle but ultimately lost 3-7.
The Cardinals have wrapped up competition in Hilton Head and will head back to D.C. for Landmark Conference action.
