BALTIMORE, Md. – For the second consecutive season, Catholic women's swimming and diving placed second at the Landmark Conference Championships. The Cardinals scored 761 points and claimed 20 medals throughout the four-day competition while earning two major awards.
Catholic dominated the gold medal count, finishing the meet with 14 while their next closest competitor totaled three. Scranton made up the difference in silver and bronze to defended its title. The Royals took first with 859 points while Drew came in third with 526.
The Cardinals had a finalist in every championship race on Sunday.
Bella Mugno led the way with her third individual victory of the meet en rout to being named Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Year. The junior has won the award in back-to-back seasons, becoming the first in program history to be honored with a major award twice. Mugno took first in this evening's 200 breaststroke final with a time of 2:24.35 to top the rest of the field by over two seconds.
Ava Snyder completed a bucket list item in the 1650 free, winning the event for the first time in her career after placing in the top three in each of her previous championship appearances. She clocked a 17:49.38 to fend off a fellow senior from Drew who touched four seconds later.
Molly Foltz hung in with the veteran crew for the entire distance and touched third with a time of 17:54.81.
Maura Sadowski followed in fifth with a personal-best time of 18:06.45.
Eight events after completing the mile, Foltz returned to the pool and swam her way to the top of the podium in the 200 fly. She sprinted to best her competition by multiple stokes with a time of 2:10.77.
Another gold medal was added to the Cardinals' totals in the 200 back.
Tara Wiarda entered the A-final seeded second, but dropped nearly five seconds off her prelim time to sweep the backstroke events for the second straight season. Her time of 2:05.73 was just .53 second off the meet record of 2:05.20. Wiarda finished the meet with three individual wins and was Catholic's second leading scorer behind Mugno.
Other notable performances included
Emily Albans and
Emily Blaskovich in the 100 free who finished fourth and sixth respectively.
Annie Zeigler, Grace Robinson, and
Olivia Palubinski all made the 200 fly final and finished fourth through sixth.
Catholic wrapped up the impressive outing on top with a win in the 400 free relay. Sadowski gave the Cardinals an early lead before giving way to Wiarda who pulled ahead a bit more. Albans and Blaskovic brought it home to stop the team's time at 3:35.13. Catholic finished the meet with victories in four out of five relays.
