Cardinals Compete at Marlins First Chance in Season Opener

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Catholic men's Indoor Track & Field Team traveled to Virginia Beach, Va. to compete in the Marlins First Chance meet in its season opener.  

Michael Brunet led the pack in the 3000 meter, capturing a first place finish in his indoor collegiate debut with a time of 8:59.15. This time places the freshman as the ninth best performer in program history. 

Tim Sweeney placed fourth in the 3000 meter with a time of 9:06.03, while teammate Tim Brown placed eighth with a time of 9:27.34.

Freshman Drew Madden made his collegiate high jump debut in impressive fashion, entering the program record books as the fourth best performer with a jump of 1.83 meters. Madden also finished fourth overall in the event.

Madden also competed in the 60 meter hurdles finals, where he placed fourth overall with a time of 8.66.

Kendrick DuPree and Peter Winter finished with the one-two in the 800 meter, respectively. The duo each earned personal bests in the event. DuPree raced a time of 1:53.80 and entered program record books as second best performer. Winter also raced a time of 1:53.93 and finds himself as the third best performer in program history. 

Calvin Hernandez qualified for the 60 meter finals with a time of 6.942 and a sixth place finish out of 53 athletes. He placed sixth in the finals with a time of 6.98. His preliminary race entered him in the record books as the third best performer in program history.

In the 5000 meter, Joey Locke ran a time 15:59.54, securing a fourth place finish. 

The Cardinals showed out in the 300 meter with Emmanuel Olarewaju and Sean Owens placing eighth and ninth, respectively. Junior Olarewaju raced a time of 36.18 and earned a new personal best in his first race as a Cardinal. Owens completed a time of 36.44. 

Sophomore Alex Saunders set a personal-best in shot put with a distance of 12.28 meters, placing eighth out of 24 competitors. 

Romell Randolph, sophomore, placed tenth out of 42 athletes in the 200 meter with a personal-best time of 22.36.

Closing out the day, the 4x400 team of DuPree, Madden, Olarewaju and Winter placed second in the event with a time of 3:23.49.

Up next, the Cardinals will host the Cardinal Track & Field Classic on January 17th at 10 AM.
