Catholic Plays No. 16 Scranton to Scoreless Draw

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Catholic men's soccer team looked to move into first place in the Landmark with a victory over 16th-ranked Scranton on Saturday afternoon in a battle between the top two teams in the conference standings. The two teams played to a stalemate over the 90 minutes, closing things out with a 0-0 draw.

Neither team got off too many shot attempts in the opening half as the Royals held a slight 3-1 shot advantage going into the halftime break. Owen Allegro came up with two saves in the first half with the first coming in the opening four minutes of the game off a shot by Tyler Colton. Allegro added another save 32 minutes into the action to keep the score tied at zero.

Christian Backich and Carson Shamoo both got shots off for the Cardinals in the early stages of the second half but neither hit the target. Allegro added four more saves in the second half to keep the shutout intact. Holden Woodings and Shamoo fired shots in the final 10 minutes to try and find a game-winning goal, but neither found the back of the net and the match ended at a 0-0 draw.

The Cardinals record moved to 10-0-6 on the season and they are now 5-0-3 against Landmark opponents. Catholic and Scranton have drawn in each of the last matchups between the two schools.

The Royals outshot the Cardinals 11-6 in the match with the Catholic shots coming from Woodings, Shamoo and Backich.

Allegro made a season-high six saves and earned his fifth shutout of the season while playing the full 90 minutes in goal. Graham Leary, Ellington Andrews, Corey Magro and Charlie Paparella also played the full 90 minutes for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals regular season finale will be played on Tuesday, October 28 against Juniata on the road. Kickoff is set for 7 pm on Gibbel Stadium.
