FREDRICKSBURG, Va. – Catholic women's tennis competed at the 2024 ITA Division III Women's Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington on Saturday. Freshman
Shloka Tambat became the first athlete in recent history to win in a Championship singles draw at this tournament.
Tambat and fellow rookie
Ella Knox represented Catholic in the champ draw. They combined on the doubles court to take on Dickinson College and ultimately fell 3-8. Both continued their day with singles matches.
Tambat won her first-round match against Ana Patino from Sweet Briar College in the third set. The reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week dropped the first set 3-6 before coming back to win the next two 6-3, 10-6. The victory sent Tambat to the round of 32 where she put up a historic fight but was topped 0-6, 3-6.
Knox faced off against number three seeded Sophia Kim from Johns Hopkins University, falling 0-6, 0-6 in two sets.
Four Cardinals represented Catholic in the Blue draw. On the singles side,
Meaghan Laniewski defeated Olivia Geoghegan from Mary Washington 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. She then dropped a hard-fought contest against Abhishree Menon of Haverford, 1-6, 1-6.
In doubles play,
Paige Brightwell and Laniewski first combined to take on a duo from Lynchburg. The pair won 8-2 to move onto the quarterfinals before falling 3-8 to St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Mairead O'Hara and
Ava Niggemeier also competed in the blue draw against Lynchburg and one their first match, 8-5. The sophomores then found themselves in a competitive battle against Salisbury but came up just short in a tiebreak with a match score of 7-8.
Catholic will continue to compete at ITA's tomorrow as Knox and Tambat play in consolation matches.
