EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Catholic University women's cross country team finished third at the Mount St. Mary's 5k Duals on Friday. The season opener featured a field of Division I competition including Mount Saint Mary's, Howard, and UMBC.
The Cardinals scored 86 points during the event. UMBC claimed the top spot with 25 points, Howard took second with 33 points, and Mount Saint Mary's rounded out the scoring with 99 points.
Emily Moehringer was the top finisher for the Cardinals. The senior finished in 8th place with a personal-best time of 19:37.51. She beat her prior 5k time by more than 2 minutes and currently holds the 16th fastest 5k time in program history.
Laurel McMahon started her sophomore campaign by clocking a 20:14.51 for 17th. Senior
Georgia Nussey also broke into the top 20 with an 18th-place finish. Her time of 20:24.47 was a vast improvement on her previous 5k time of 22:12.2.
Alexa Grassi crossed the finish line in 20:43.43, besting her time of 22:26.1 at this event last year. The sophomore came in 22nd, less than one second behind the previous finisher.
The fifth finisher for the Cardinals was freshman
Sophia McNavich. The rookie placed 27th in her collegiate debut with a time of 21:18.46.
Catholic will compete at the Cantello Invitational next weekend as they travel to Annapolis, Md. The September 7 event is set to start at 9:15 a.m.
