ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — A weather-affected day one of the 2024 Landmark Conference Championships has concluded with the Catholic University men's track and field team scoring points in two of the five events that have gone final.
Defending champions Susquehanna are out to a hot start as the River Hawks (61) own a lead over hosts Elizabethtown (45), Moravian (40) and Scranton (26). Juniata (14) and Catholic (9) are the only other programs to score points as of yet.Â
Susquehanna grabbed a comfortable lead thanks to an impressive performance in the long jump that saw River Hawks sweep the top three spots and take five of the eight point-scoring positions. Most of Catholic's points also came in the event as graduate student Jordyn Walker went 6.67m to finish fourth behind the River Hawk trio and Connor Powers placed seventh. Powers' mark of 6.48 meters is a new season's best.
No Cardinals were able to break into the top eight in the 1500m, the hammer throw or the javelin but Dylan Stefans did produce a personal best on the track while Bobby Santangelo also posted one in the hammer throw. Aidan Lang finished just outside the point-netting positions with a season's-best toss of 40.12 meters to place ninth.Â
It was a good day on the track for Catholic as 2023-24 Landmark Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Year Jevontae Fearwell made easy work of the prelims, qualifying through to tomorrow's 100m and 200m finals as the top qualifier in both events.
Fearwell was one of just two men to run under 12 seconds in the 100m, winning his heat with a time of 10.92. He will be joined in the final by Sam Compton who qualified on time after going 11.14.
The duo will both compete in tomorrow's 200m final as well as they both produced personal bests in the prelims today. Fearwell was the only competitor to post a time under 22 seconds with a dash of 21.90 to win what was by far the fastest of the three heats. Compton, running the same heat, followed Fearwell to the line with the second-fastest prelim time of 22.25 while Sebastian Lopez also qualified to tomorrow's final automatically, joining the aforementioned duo with a personal-best time of 22.55. Fearwell's mark of 21.90 makes him the joint-second-fastest man in program history in the event.
Joe Wolfe placed seventh in the 10,000-meter run to conclude the day and earn two points for the Cardinals while Chilowe Osai qualified through to tomorrow's final in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.19.
The men's pole vault was delayed due to weather conditions and eventually postponed until tomorrow. With indoor All-American Christian Di Nicolantonio on the entries list, Catholic are favored to pick up some meaningful points in this event.
Competition on what looks to be a rainy championship Sunday is set to begin at 11 a.m.
