TOWSOND, Md.— The Catholic University men's tennis season came to an end on Friday afternoon after falling 1-5 to Goucher in a Landmark Conference Semifinal contest. The Cardinals finish the season with an overall record of 14-9.
The top-seeded Gophers took a 2-1 lead in doubles action. They opened the match with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles, but the Cardinals countered with a hard-fought victory at No. 2.
Tycho Janssen and
Ben Perks earned the only point for the Cardinals. They battled for an 8-7 victory after sending the match to a tie break.
James Earwood and
Diego Romo won five sets at No. 1 doubles, but were edged out by Goucher's top pair in an 8-5 finish.
On the singles side, the Cardinals put up a strong effort in each match but fell just short with their opponents taking wins at No. 4, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to clinch the match and suspend the rest of play.
The three unfinished matches were all in a third set tiebreak when Goucher clinched the match. Janssen, Earwood and
Henry Ogden all fought back in the second to force an extra set. At No. 1 singles, Janssen lost the first set 4-6 but made a speedy recovery to bounce back with a 6-2 win. Likewise, Earwood and Ogden dropped 4-6 sets to start before winning the second.
In the clinching match,
Charlie Robbins put up a good fight over two sets but Goucher would ultimately take the No. 5 singles match 6-3, 7-5 to secure the win.
The Cardinals finished the season with a 5-4 conference record and one postseason win. Goucher continued its undefeated streak against conference opponents and will compete against Drew in the Championship.
