LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Katie Scolese and
Sophia Fike were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region V Third Team, the committee announced last week.
NFCA All-Region athletes are nominated by their head coach, voted for by the coaches in their region, and ultimately selected by elected All-American committee members. These honorees are in the top 1% of student-athletes competing during the 2023-24 season.
Fike was a key member of the Cardinal's lineup this season, earning the prestigious accolade after leading the team in six statistical categories. The senior was one of two Cardinals to start in all of the team's 43 contest this season, playing third base for the first time in her career. She registered 59 hits to break the program record for most hits in a single season. Her total included nine doubles and six triples, the second-most by a Catholic player in a single season. Fike produced a batting average of .391, the highest among all players alongside
Amy Gastright while driving in 12 runs and crossing the plate an outstanding 43 times. Fike was also named to the All-Landmark First Team for the second time in her three-year Catholic career
Scolese had a massive sophomore season, leading the team in RBI and home runs while ranking second behind Fike in almost every other category this season. She featured in 41 of Catholic's 43 games, holding down the shortstop position. She produced a batting average of .343 while registering 46 hits including 12 doubles, two triples, and four home runs. Scolese struck out just five times in 134 at-bats and was named to the All-Landmark Second team for the second consecutive season.
This year marks the first time since 2014 in which two Cardinals were selected to NFCA all-region teams in the same season.
Alex Garza was the lone Cardinal to earn the honor last season after leading the team in batting average and contributing significantly in the outfield.
