CHESTER, Pa. — A handful of athletes from the Catholic University men's track and field team made the trip north to Widener to give it one more go at qualifying for the 2024 NCAA Division Championships on Monday.
The Catholic 4x100 meter relay team of Sam Compton, Jevontae Fearwell, Sebastian Lopez and Chilowe Osai started off the day in style with a program record. The quartet ran 41.33 to place third on the day, bettering the previous mark ran earlier this season by the same group of four by .11 seconds. The time was also just .01 second off of Susquehanna's championship record set last weekend.
Osai set a new personal best and improved on his third-fastest time in program history in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.25. The trio of Fearwell, Lopez and James Galang ran in the 100m dash, with Fearwell, fresh off of a conference championship crown in the event last weekend, going 10.79 to place third. Lopez ran 11.00, .10 slower than his personal best while Galang clocked in at 11.30.
The same trio featured in the 200m dash, finishing lower in the overall standings on the day but producing well for their personal standards. Farewell again led the way with a personal-best sprint of 21.73. The dash pushes him to solo-second-fastest in program history in the event, improving his previous time by .17 seconds. Lopez broke the 22-second mark for the first time in his collegiate career, going 21.95 for a personal best of his own. With the impressive dash, Lopez became just the fourth-ever Cardinal to go under 22 seconds while Galang improved his personal best by .01 seconds (22.72) to remain ninth on the program's all-time list.
In the field, Jordyn Walker, competing in his hometown, participated in both the long jump and the triple jump. The program record-holder in both events went 6.64 meters on his final jump to place seventh in the long jump while logging a mark of 13.15 in the triple jump.
Christian Di Nicolantonio will represent the Cardinals in the pole vault at NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on the weekend of May 25-27. The junior placed third at NCAA DIII Indoor Championships to earn All-America honors this winter and currently owns the top outdoor mark in Division III at 5.16m, an impressive .06 meters better than his closest competitor.Â
