Elizabethtown Hangs on, Catholic Eliminated from Landmark Tournament

SCRANTON, Pa. - Catholic fell to Elizabethtown in Saturday evening's Landmark Conference Elimination Game, 7-6. The Cardinals will await their fate during Monday's NCAA Division III Selection Show.

Catholic scored the first four runs of the contest, taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning. Mitchel Johnson drove in the first run of the game, scoring Sammy Burman with an RBI single in the first.

The Cardinals tacked on three more in the second inning, all unearned runs as an Elizabethtown throwing error allowed a pair of runs to score before Zach Burton brought home Steve Thomas with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

The Blue Jays responded back, scoring six unanswered runs between the second and third innings to take a 6-4 lead. Bryce Keller homered to make it 4-1 before Alex McClain reached on an error with one away. The Blue Jays would score two more runs in the inning on RBI singles from Garrett Schwartzbeck and Mason Woolwine.

Now trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the third, the Blue Jays scored three more runs after an error earlier in the inning. Keller drove in another run to tie the game before a McClain sacrifice fly gave the Blue Jays the lead. David Woolley singled to make it 6-4.

Catholic battled back in the fifth, scoring a pair of runs to tie the contest. Logan Eilbacher drove in Burton to make it 6-5 before Jesse Lacefield tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Keller came through once again for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the fifth, doubling and scoring as Scwartzbeck brought him in with a sacrifice fly.

Catholic put a runner on third base in each of the final three innings, but was unable to score the tying run.

Johnson had three hits in the game for Catholic while Burton and Eilbacher each had two hits and a double.

After Elizabethtown scored six runs (four unearned) off Catholic starter Danny Fitzgerald, Danny Prior, Brendan Martin, and Jake Kenney combined for 5.0 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen. Kenney struck out four in 2.0 innings.
