Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Angelo Petruccy

Cardinals End Regular Season with Most Wins Since 2014, Ready for Quarterfinal on Wednesday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Catholic University men's tennis team fell just short in a battle with a formidable Moravian team in both squads' regular season finale on Saturday night.

After the match was delayed over six hours due to weather, the teams finally took the court after being relocated to the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Md. Despite the long day and hours of sitting around, both teams came out firing and were up for the challenge, producing a high-level match.

Very little separated the two teams as four of the nine matches featured a tiebreak of some kind, including two third-set breakers.

Catholic held a 2-1 lead after doubles play as the duos James Earwood/Diego Romo and Tycho Janssen/Ben Perks came away with victories at the top of the ladder. It was almost a clean sweep on the doubles court but Henry Ogden/Charlie Robbins fell at No. 3 in a tiebreak by just a single mini-break, 7(5)-8.

The Cardinals again found success at the top of the ladder getting wins in very competitive matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Janssen came through at the top spot by a break in both sets (6-4, 6-4) while Earwood advanced through what was arguably the tightest match of the night. He won the first set in a tiebreak before his opponent earned a decisive break right at the end of the second frame to force a third-set tiebreaker. Earwood then asserted his dominance, running away with the extra frame, 10-1.

Romo and Perks fell in two extremely tight matches at No. 3 and No. 4. Romo fell by just a single mini-break in a third-set tiebreaker after his opponent and he exchanged 6-1 sets. Perks fell by the finest of margins, losing the first set in a tiebreak before dropping the second frame, 5-7.

No. 5 and No. 6 were forced to play supersets due to time constraints at the venue. Ogden showed extreme fight at No. 5, fighting off eight match points before eventually succumbing 5-8.

With the result, the Cardinals conclude the regular season 13-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The 13 wins are the most in a decade, surpassing the 2013-14 team that posted an overall record of 12-9.

Nate Farlow's squad was playing for the opportunity to host a Landmark Conference Quarterfinal match on Wednesday. However, with the loss, the Cardinals will have to go on the road after earning the No. 5 seed.

Catholic will travel to Juniata (11-6, 6-3 LC) to do battle. The Eagles got the better of a shorthanded Cardinals squad when the two teams met just two weeks ago. Catholic will look to avenge that 7-2 loss in Huntingdon at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
