WASHINGTON, D.C. — Brilliant performances up and down the roster powered Catholic to a marquee victory over Colorado College on Sunday afternoon, 10-9.
The Cardinals picked up their second win over a ranked team this season, closing out the non-conference slate in style with the win over the Tigers. Mia Perkell scored the decisive goal with just 22 seconds remaining to push Catholic to its second win in the last 24 hours.
After putting a career-high five past Juniata yesterday, Perkell continued her stellar run of form with a hat trick today. Her goals were vital to Catholic's success with her second knotting the game at eight with just over 10 minutes remaining before her powerful shot to the far post beat the Tiger goalkeeper and gave the Cardinals the win right at the end.
Enough cannot be said about the weekend that Rachel Rubenstein produced. After a five caused turnovers and six ground ball performance against Juniata yesterday, the senior surpassed those totals today. Rubenstein absolutely dominated with a career-high seven caused turnovers and matched another career mark with nine ground balls.
Lauren Davidson was also huge for the Cardinals in goal, making eight saves, including a number of key stops in the first half. The senior also added two ground balls and one caused turnover en route to her 10th win of the season.
Catholic got out to the perfect start, beginning the game on a 3-0 run. Freshman Charlotte Spaulding was handed her first collegiate start by head coach Meghan McDonogh after a strong showing yesterday and opened the scoring after eight minutes with an unassisted tally. Jill Kennedy then converted on a Cardinal player advantage before a Riley Martin tally forced a timeout from the Tiger coaching staff.
Colorado College responded perfectly after the timeout, erasing the deficit before the end of the stanza before extending its run in the second quarter to take its first lead of the game at 4-3. Mattea Del Peschio and Perkell pushed Catholic back in front before Kendall Havill completed her hat trick with two goals in the final 31 seconds of the half to propel Colorado College to a halftime lead.
For the second time in as many days Catholic emerged from halftime facing a deficit but again the Cardinals showed great resolve after the break. Lindsay Sawyer helped Catholic grab the momentum by scoring the first two goals of the third quarter to edge back ahead, 7-6.Â
Colorado College scored the next two goals to ensure the visitors held the lead after three quarters. Catholic did not lead at the conclusion of any quarter aside from the final and all-important stanza.
Caroline Regan played a key and perhaps underrated role in the victory, scoring just her second goal of the season with 3:26 remaining to equalize. She then completed an important late clear after a Catholic defensive stop that eventually led to Perkell's game-winner.
There was very little between the teams as the game was very even. Colorado College went 4-for-5 on free-position shots to create an edge in comparison to Catholic's mark of 1-for-3, but the Cardinals won the turnover battle 23-16. The Tigers won four more draw controls than Catholic (13-9) but McDonogh's team won the ground ball battle by margin of seven (23-16).
Devon Ortman was outstanding for the Tigers in virtually every facet of the game. She scored three times, registered two assists, won six draw controls, scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. To Catholic's credit though, all of her points came before halftime as the Cardinals held her in check during the second half.
Catholic will now ready for the all-important final weekend of Landmark Conference play on Saturday. The Cardinals can still secure the top seed in the conference tournament with a win at Wilkes and a Scranton loss at Moravian. Draw control in the regular-season finale is set for 1 p.m.
