Excellent Pitching Pushes Moravian Past Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Moravian took control of the top spot in the Landmark Conference softball standings with a doubleheader sweep of Catholic on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals drop to 21-11 overall and 5-5 in conference play heading into the final stretch of the season.

Game 1 - Moravian 3, Catholic 1

Madi Cunningham and Aubrynn Arcement dueled it out in a matchup of two of the top arms in the conference with Cunningham getting the slight edge in a 3-1 victory for the Greyhounds.

For Catholic, Arcement allowed three runs in a complete game effort and drove in the only run for the Cardinals with an RBI double. Cunningham struck out six and allowed just five hits and a run to earn her 11th win this season for Moravian.

Catholic scored its lone run in the second inning as Katie Scolese was hit by a pitch to start the frame. After Cunningham retired the next two hitters, Arcement lined a double to center. Shayla Morgan nearly made a spectacular catch, but she wasn't able to hold on as Scolese motored around to score from first.

Moravian answered back with two in the third as Lindsey Gawrys and Marcie Silberman hit back-to-back two-out doubles to tie it and give Moravian the lead. Silberman added another RBI in the fifth inning with a line drive to left-center, scoring Holly Walter who singled with one away.

Catholic had a chance in the bottom of the fifth as Kerri Hatcliffe led off with a single, but pinch-runner Sam Grillo was picked off of first. Caroline Adams drew a walk and Toni Ruley singled to put two on with one away, but Cunningham retired Mia Szap and Sophia Fike to end the threat.

Game 2 - Moravian 3, Catholic 1

Thanks to a lights out performance from Moravian's Natalie Otto, Catholic was held to just one hit and one run in game two. The first 18 Cardinal hitters were retired by the Greyhound starter, but Fike hustled out an infield single in the seventh to end Otto's perfect game bid.

After beating out the single, Fike caught Otto looking away and took second. A bunt and an RBI ground out from Scolese later, the Cardinals were on the board, but Otto got Arcement to line out sharply to center to end the game.

Sage Snyder drove in the first run of the game for Moravian in the opening frame, driving in Walter who singled, moved up on a wild pitch, and then stole third. The Greyhounds added two more in the fourth with an RBI double from Ajayla Elmore and an RBI single from Sarah DeStefano.

Similar to Arcement in game one, Catholic starter Alex Pley was solid throughout, scattering seven hits in a complete game effort.

The Cardinals will finish with eight straight road contests. First up is Marymount on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
