ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Catholic scored the first 24 goals of Wednesday afternoon's 26-1 victory at Elizabethtown to improve to 8-6 on the season and 6-1 in Landmark Conference play. 13 different players scored while eight found the back of the net multiple times in the winning effort for
Meghan McDonogh's squad.
Lindsay Sawyer and
Charlotte Spaulding scored four goals apiece for Catholic while
Izzy Fiore added a first-half hat trick to pace the offensive outburst.
Mattea Del Peschio,
Maggie Traynor,
Riley Martin,
Jessie Lee, and
Madeline Kelly all scored two goals in the victory. Catholic's 26 goals are its most since a 27-5 victory over St. Mary's (Ind.) in the NCAA First Round in 2022.
Defensively, this marks the third time this season that Catholic has held its opponent to five or less goals and the 14th time in the last four seasons. The Cardinals shutout Goucher 24-0 in April of 2023. Catholic held Elizabethtown to just 10 shots while forcing 14 turnovers.
The Cardinals scored 11 in the first quarter with Lee scoring the first goal just 10 seconds into the game off the opening draw control. The first six goals of the contest game unassisted with Fiore,
Jill Kennedy, Del Peschio, Traynor, and Sawyer all scoring in the first 5:19 of the game. Fiore made it a hat trick with 7:42 left in the first quarter before goals from
Mia Perkell and Del Peschio pushed the lead to 10 with more than five minutes still to play in the period.
Catholic would go on to score five goals in each of the ensuing three periods to earn the 25-goal win. Spaulding and Sawyer each scored one goal in all four quarters with Spaulding setting a new career-high in goals scored. The freshman has scored all six of her career goals in the last three games. She also recorded her first career assist this afternoon on Martin's second goal of the third quarter. With two goals, Traynor became the third Cardinal this season to reach 20 goals scored on the season, joining Fiore (28) and Perkell (22).
Clare Martin had a standout performance on defense, causing three turnovers and recording three ground balls.
Rachel Rubenstein added two ground balls and a caused turnover. Catholic won 20-of-29 draw controls with Ri. Martin (7),
Tori Wilsey (5), and
Ariana Bransfield (5) dominating at the draw.
Catholic will play on back-to-back days this weekend with Juniata coming to town on Saturday afternoon before No. 25 Colorado College comes to D.C. on Sunday.
