Cards Show Well at Bill Butler Invitational

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — The Catholic University men's track and field team traveled north to compete at the Bill Butler Invitational at West Chester University on Saturday.

Aidan Lang grabbed a top-five finish in the shot put, producing a mark of 12.45 meters. Warren Gillis also competed in the event, tossing 11.08 meters to set a new personal best. 

Lang was a busy man on the day, competing in three more field events. He grabbed another top-10 finish with a toss of 34.82 meters in the hammer throw to come 10th. He also placed 13th in the javelin with a throw of 36.10 meters and grabbed a 17th-place finish in the discus with a mark of 29.98 meters.

Teammates Bobby Santangelo and Luke Pappano sandwiched Lang in the hammer throw. Santangelo just edged Lang by .01 meters to take ninth. The new mark of 34.83 meters sees him improve his personal best from last week at the Dalton Ebank Invitational by .55 meters while Pappano tossed 34.36 meters to take 11th in a new event for him.

Joey Locke smashed his previous personal-best time in the 1,500-meter run. The impressive freshman went 4:17.44, nearly three seconds faster than his previous best en route to a top-20 finish. He came in 19th ahead of teammates David Stango (35th, 4:27.68) and Blaise Trapani (62th, 5:10.30). Stango and Trapani also competed in the 800m, placing 32nd and 55th, respectively.

Four Cardinals scored points in the 110-meter hurdles. Cayden Drost led the way with a personal-best time of 17.75 to place fourth. Josh Phillips (18.10), Joseph Sparmo (18.55) and Jonathan Forrest (19.20) followed Drost to the line to finish six-seven-eight. Sparmo set a new personal best by more than half a second. The same trio of Phillips (9th, 1:01.81), Sparmo (10th, 1:01.98) and Forrest (14th, 1:04.44) followed Nick Troy to the line in the 400-meter hurdles. Troy went 1:00.80 to place seventh.

Brandon Hancock and Connor Powers produced nearly identical marks in the long jump, with Hancock going 5.84 meters for 14th and Powers coming one spot behind him with a mark of 5.82 meters. Powers also registered a mark of 12.10 meters in the triple jump for fourth place and ran a time of 12.16 to place 48th in the 100-meter dash.

A trio of Cardinals competed in the 200-meter dash with freshman Marco Indelicato leading the way for Catholic. He ran 24.00 to place 33rd overall while Matthew Brown (47th, 24.39) and Antonio Hudson (58th, 24.67) followed him to the line.

The same trio ran the 400 with Brown leading the way this time, placing 17th with a time of 52.46. Indelicato finished 28th with a time of 53.53, just ahead of Colin Matthews, the fourth Cardinal in the field, who placed 30th with a time of 53.73, just .06 seconds off of his personal best. Hudson placed 35th with a time of 54.73.

Competing at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa., Jordyn Walker set a new season's-best mark in the long jump. The graduate student went 6.61 meters on his second jump to place 20th and better his top mark of the season by .01 meters. He holds the program record in the event.

A handful of Cardinals are slated to join Walker at the Bison Outdoor Invitational for competition during tomorrow's day two.
