Tozzi Shuts Out Colonels, Cardinals Sweep Doubleheader

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. - Catholic improved to 20-7 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Wilkes on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania. The Cardinals extended their win streak to seven games ahead of tomorrow's series conclusion.

Game 1 - Catholic 6, Wilkes 0

Catholic sophomore starting pitcher Roman Tozzi flummoxed the Wilkes hitters to the tune of a complete game shutout in the Cardinals' 6-0 victory over the Colonels in game one.

Tozzi completed the second shutout in less than a week for Catholic, allowing just five hits and striking out 10 as he improved to 6-0 on the season.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Steve Thomas and Zach Burton scored on a wild pitch after Thomas reached on a walk and Burton singled to left.

Wilkes starter Hunter Lawall settled in and showed well until the Cardinals pushed a third run across in the sixth. Baron Dichoso was hit by a pitch with one away and moved into scoring position as Jack Elwell laid down a sacrifice bunt. Derek Zelesnick smacked a two-out single to center, scoring Dichoso to push Catholic's lead to 3-0.

The Cardinals put up a three spot in the top of the ninth to give Tozzi some extra insurance. Matt Perlin opened the inning with a single, followed by a base knock from Thomas. Burton hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Perlin and extend the lead to 4-0. With two outs and runners on first and second, Jesse Lacefield doubled to right, scoring Logan Eilbacher and Sean O'Mara who pinch-ran for Thomas.

The Colonels went three up, three down as Tozzi finished off the shutout in the ninth inning. Tozzi retired the final 13 batters of the contest and didn't allow a base runner in five of the nine innings in the victory.

In 41.1 innings pitched this season, Tozzi has pitched to a 1.31 ERA with 49 strikeouts and just six earned runs allowed. Opposing hitters are batting just .149 against the sophomore.

Perlin had three hits and Burton had two to lead Catholic's 10-hit effort offensively. The Cardinals also drew six walks with Eilbacher garnering two intentional walks. Eilbacher and Lacefield had the lone extra-base hits for Catholic while Eilbacher swiped a bag for the Cardinals.

Game Two - Catholic 4, Wilkes 3

Wilkes scored the first run of the contest in game two, getting a run home after a leadoff triple from Nathan Loch, but the Cardinals would ultimately bounce back to grab a 4-3 victory.

Catholic pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead over the Colonels. Three straight singles from Dichoso, Perlin, and Thomas pushed in the first run as Thomas drove in Dichoso with an RBI single to right. Burton hit a one-out grounder to short, bringing Perlin home with an RBI ground out to put Catholic ahead.

Wilkes scored in the fourth to tie the contest as Zach Luksic hit a one-out triple off Danny Fitzgerald before scoring on an RBI single by Jimmy Brazofsky. The Colonels took the lead in the fifth on an RBI single off the bat of Chase Vrabel. Jacob Cambria doubled to lead off the inning before scoring on the base knock.

Catholic struck back in the top of the seventh, retaking the lead thanks to a two-run Burton single. Dichoso and Perlin both singled once again, bringing Mike Show into the game to pitch for the Colonels. Thomas grounded out, but Burton came through with two outs, scoring the pair on a single through the left side.

Fitzgerald took a no-decision after tossing 5.0 innings of three-run ball while Cormac Terry earns the victory with 3.0 scoreless out of the bullpen. Terry struck out three and allowed just one hit. Freshman Luke Cardman logs a save with a scoreless ninth to close out the doubleheader sweep.

Burton was the key cog at the plate with two hits and three RBI while Dichoso and Perlin each had multi-hit games for Catholic.

The final game of the series is set for Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. at Bruggeworth Field.
