WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Catholic University women's lacrosse team got off to a winning start in Landmark Conference play on Saturday afternoon, downing Lycoming in convincing fashion, 21-5.
Meghan McDonogh's team did not concede a goal in the opening quarter, rattling off 10 of its own to put the game beyond a reasonable doubt inside the first stanza.
Jessie Lee provided two assists on the first two goals of the game as Ellie Verrill opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the contest. Lindsay Sawyer also took a feed from Lee, who added a third helper a late in the game, to score.Â
Izzy Fiore got on the board midway through the first quarter before scoring three straight later in the period to complete a first-quarter hat trick. The sophomore scored once again in the fourth quarter to set a new career-high for goals in a single game with five.
Mia Perkell (4) and Maggie Traynor (3) also scored hat tricks on the day while Ariana Bransfield netted the first two goals of her collegiate career in the win. Mattea Del Peschio, Tori Wilsey, Jill Kennedy and Lee all chipped in with single goals as well.
Catholic found a real advantage in the clear as McDonogh's team went a perfect 12-of-12 in that aspect while holding the Warriors to just 11-of-18. The Cardinals were also quicker to react when the ball was loose, grabbing 21 ground balls to Lycoming's six.
A staggering five Cardinals had three or more draw controls. Lee led the way with four and the quartet of Verrill, Wilsey, Lauren Bendo and Riley Martin each won three draws while Rachel Rubenstein caused two turnovers and scooped up one ground ball. Goalkeeper Lauren Davidson had a strong day, making five saves while causing three turnovers and grabbing three ground balls.
The Cardinals will look to continue their momentum on Monday when Catholic welcomes No. 22 UChicago to Carlini Field. Opening draw control is set for 4 p.m.
