CLERMONT, Fla. — Alex Garza had a big day at the plate as Catholic split another doubleheader as part of the team's spring break trip in Florida.
Game 1 — Catholic 8, Swarthmore 1Â
Aubrynn Arcement was outstanding once again, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning as she twirled a complete game, allowing just a single unearned run in the opening frame. Arcement struck out three batters, and allowed just one hit, one walk and one hit batter in the contest. She retired 12 consecutive hitters between the second and sixth innings. She also chipped in with two hits and one run scored, offensively.Â
Arcement was one of four players with multi-hit games as Garza led the way with three knocks and two RBIs. Katie Scolese added two hits, including a triple, and two runs for Catholic while Kerri Hatcliffe had a two-hit day. Toni Ruley had the Cardinals' other extra-base hit, driving in two runs with a double. Freshman Mia Szap drove in two runs as well for the Cardinal attack.Â
Catholic got on the board first as Scolese reached base on an error with two outs. Elise Faxon drew a walk to set up Garza who drove in Scolese with an RBI single through the right side.Â
Swarthmore used two Catholic errors in the bottom of the first inning to push a run across, but Arcement would keep them from crossing home plate the rest of the way.Â
Szap added two runs to the total in the second, driving in Hatcliffe and Sophia Fike with a single to center field. Hatcliffe started the inning with a sharply hit single to left, moved up on a sac bunt from Caroline Adams, then moved to third as Fike singled to center before scoring on the Szap base hit.Â
Still 3-1 entering the fifth inning, Catholic added three runs of insurance on four hits, forcing a Swarthmore pitching change in the inning. Scolese led things off with a triple to right and scored on another Garza RBI single. After Arcement picked up a base hit, Swarthmore replaced starter Emily Bertrand with Abby Reed. After a passed ball put two runners into scoring position, Hatcliffe drove in Garza with an RBI single. Sam Grillo, pinch-running for Arcement, would score on a wild pitch a few moments later to increase Catholic's lead to 6-1.Â
Ruley put the finishing touches on the win in the top of the seventh, driving in Arcement and Hatcliffe. Arcement singled before Hatcliffe drew a walk to set things up for Ruley who smacked a double to center to drive in the pair.Â
Arcement now sits at 3-3 this season with a 2.65 ERA and three complete games.Â
Game 2 — Hope 8, Catholic 6
The Cardinals got off to the perfect start in the game, scoring in the first inning for the fourth-straight contest. After starting pitcher Alex Pley put Hope down in order in to begin the game, Fike scored on an error after a lead-off single. Scolese then plated Szap to push the lead to 2-0.
Garza came through again in the third when she produced a double to plate Scolese. Amy Gastright scored later in the inning when Kaitlyn Murphy drove a ball to the outfield to convert with a sacrific fly.
Hope was able to battle back in the middle innings. After Pley allowed just one hit through the opening three innings, the Flying Dutch were finally able to get to the freshman in the fourth. A one-out double cut into the Cardinal lead before Pley did well to get out of the inning.Â
It was the fifth inning that proved problematic for the Cardinals as Hope was able to plate six runs to complete the turnaround.
Catholic did its best to fight back as the Cardinals responded immediately in the bottom of the inning. Gastright led off with a double and Garza was gifted a base by a Dutch error before Hatcliffe cashed in with a double to plate both of them and cut the deficit to just one at 7-6. Hope then switched pitchers, bringing Samantha Vermeesch into the cirlce. The senior did brilliantly to shut the door on Catholic, securing three consecutive outs to kill the rally. Vermeesch pitched the remainder of the game for the Flying Dutch without allowing a hit.
The loss is Pley's first in six appearances in what has been a brilliant beginning to the newcomers' season.
Szap, hitting .313 in 12 career games, takes the team lead with nine RBIs this season. With four hits, Garza joins Szap, Scolese and Fike with 12 or more hits thus far.
