Catholic Edges Past Montclair State, Falls to Wheaton at The Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Catholic made it three straight doubleheader splits to start the season as it earned a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Montclair State before dropping a contest to Wheaton (Mass.) on Sunday at The Spring Games.

Game 1 -  Catholic 3, Montclair State 2

A late-inning Katie Scolese homer proved to be the difference as Catholic opened up The Spring Games with a 3-2 victory over Montclair State in nine innings on Sunday evening.

Catholic and Montclair State entered the ninth inning tied 1-1 thanks to tremendous pitching performances from Alex Pley and Sage Rizzi.

With Amanda Gomez placed on second to start the inning, Scolese drilled a 3-2 pitch over the center field wall for a two-run homer, putting Catholic ahead 3-1. In the bottom of the ninth, Molly Colligan doubled in the placed runner to bring Montclair State within a run with nobody out, but Pley stood tall and closed out a nine-inning complete game to earn her second win of the season.

Pley pitched all nine innings, scattered four hits, struck out three, and allowed two unearned runs to help Catholic improve to 3-2 on the season. Rizzi was also impressive, striking out six and allowing two earned runs in a valiant losing effort.

Catholic took an early lead, scoring in the second inning as Mia Szap led things off with a bunt single. Szap advanced to second on a passed ball and came around to score on an RBI double off the bat of Sophia Fike

The Red Hawks took advantage of a tough defensive inning for Catholic to tie the game in the fifth. Catholic committed two errors and allowed a run to score as obstruction was called against catcher Kaitlyn Murphy on a play at the plate. Pley got Liz Mullen to line out with a runner on third to end the inning.

Scolese was 3-4 at the plate, driving in two runs for Catholic while Fike had two hits and also swiped a pair of bases.

Game 2 - Catholic 0, Wheaton 4

Catholic fell in game two, 4-0, to Wheaton (Mass.) as starting pitcher Amber Arcand dazzled in the circle. She held the Cardinals to just two hits without issuing a walk.

For Catholic, Justina Benvenuto started in the circle, allowing two earned runs (three total) in 4.1 innings. Amy Gastright struck out two in 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one run before giving way to Olivia Stinchcomb who pitched a scoreless seventh inning in the loss.

Scolese and freshman catcher Elise Faxon recorded the lone hits in the contest for Catholic, both singles.

Wheaton manufactured a run in the first frame, getting a lead-off double from Juliette Zito before a bunt and a ground ball brought her home.

Scolese singled in the bottom of the first with two outs, but Arcand induced a pop fly off the bat of Fike. Faxon singled to open up the second inning for Catholic, but she would remain stuck at first and the Cardinals would fail to log another hit.

Arcand helped herself with an RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it 2-0 in favor of the Lyons. Wheaton would go on to add runs in the fifth and sixth to add insurance in the victory.

Catholic will play Ohio Northern and Mount Saint Mary College on day two at the Legends Way Ballfields.
