WASHINGTON, D.C. - This upcoming weekend, Catholic baseball will host the inaugural Matt Kurkjian ALS Awareness Invitational. The three-day event will bring Salve Regina, Western New England, and Stockton to Washington, D.C.
In September 2023, Catholic baseball lost a dear friend in Matt Kurkjian. A 1978 graduate and Catholic Hall of Famer, Kurkjian was a tremendous teammate and competitor. In his honor, head coach Ross Natoli created the 'Matt Kurkjian Ultimate Teammate Award' to honor the senior student-athlete who best personified the attributes that made Kurkjian a beloved figure.
"Matt Kurkjian was a terrific player and all-out competitor who was far and away the heart and soul of each team he played on during his Hall of Fame career at Catholic from 1974-1978," said Natoli. "Matt deeply cared about his team's success beyond his personal accomplishments, and rallied his teammates to respect and play the game the right way, compete to the fullest, and prepare for success both on and off the field."
This weekend's invitational was created not only to honor Kurkjian's legacy, but to continue to bring awareness to the ALS. To learn more about the disease, click here.
