Catholic Wraps Up Fall Season at Head of the Occoquan

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Catholic men's rowing team traveled to Sandy Run Regional Park on Saturday to compete at the Head of the Occoquan. This marked the third and final regatta of the Cardinals' fall season. 

Two Cardinal crews competed in the Men's Collegiate Varsity 8+ event. The varsity eight featured an identical lineup to last week's boating at the Head of Schuylkill. Coxswain Matt Blomgren led a crew of Jack Koubek (8), Dave Fritz (7), Jonah Stofko (6), Ryan Lewis (5), Alexander Canada (4), Timothy Kling (3), Mason Zajac (2), and Sean Farrelly (1) to a third place finish in a field featuring ten boats. They clocked a time of 16:44.501 to round out the top three behind Loyola (16:06.172) and Delaware (16:34.312). 

The second varsity eight boat of David Bernardo (coxswain), Sean Morgenstern (8), Andrew Palmer (7), Roman Smith (6), Charles Moran (5), Thomas Robertson (4), Alan Nicholas (3), Luis Piñero (2), and Caleb Gascoyne (1) placed eighth. They navigated the course in 17:12.166 to beat out Penn State (9th, 17:46.971) and Washington College (10th, 19:22.104). The Cardinals crossed the finish line less than one second behind St. Mary's who came in seventh with a time of 17:11.170. 

The Cardinals also entered a boat in the Men's Collegiate Novice 8+ race. Led by coxswain Maely Gomez, the crew of Andrew Oross (8), Peter Huber (7), Liam Schuette (6), Julian Vences (5), Luke Busby (4), Daniel Robertson (3), Kyle Ivey (2), and Patrick Burke (1) rowed to a sixth place finish. They clocked a time of 21:54.394 to beat out the last place team, St. Johns, by nearly 12 seconds. 

Catholic has wrapped its fall season and will continue competition in the spring.
