Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Julia Tomlinson

Cardinals Sweep St. Mary's to Remain Undefeated

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Catholic women's tennis swept St. Mary's, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-0 and remain undefeated on the season.

The Cardinals took the opening point of the match with three wins in doubles play. Paige Brightwell and Alyson Morris teamed up at the No. 3 spot and made quick work of their opponents with a 6-3 win. Shloka Tambat and Mairead O'Hara also found success at the No. 1 spot, finishing with a 6-2 victory. Ella Knox and Meaghan Laniewski rounded out the pairings playing at No. 2 and came away with a hard-fought 7-5 win in a close match. 

In singles play, Tambat won a tight first set in a tiebreaker to take an early advantage. She found herself down 4-5 in the second set but rallied to win the last three games to keep the Seahawks scoreless. 

Ella Knox dominated in her singles match at No. 2. She did not allow a game in the first set and only gave up two in the seconds to finish on top 6-0, 6-2. 

Laniewski and O'Hara were both able to come back from a 2-5 deficit to win sets. Laniewski won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 while O'Hara won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 4.

Morris played in the No. 6 spot and won the first set easily, 6-2, before fighting off a second-set comeback attempt to secure a 6-4 victory. Brightwell also won important points down the stretch to earn a victory at No. 5. 

The Cardinals will remain on the road for their second contest of the weekend happening tomorrow. The Dutchmen Invitational hosted by Lebanon Valley College will begin at 1 p.m.
