Joe Earley and
Darren Horton each shot 76 on day one of the Maxon-Dixon Collegiate Invitational to lead Catholic men's golf. The Cardinals teed off at 10:15 this morning at Waynesboro Country Club and will play 18 more tomorrow afternoon to finish out the two-day event.
Ed Dolan sent Earley, Horton,
Tim Cleary,
Mario Ventresca, and
Matthew Dietl to represent Catholic as the group totaled a 316 (+28) with Cleary and Ventresca shooting 82's (+10). Dietl shot an 83 in the opening round of the highly competitive tournament.
Catholic will have a hill to climb on Sunday as it enters the day in 17th place, five shots shy of Dickinson and six shots back of Landmark foe Goucher and Hood College. Gettysburg holds the first round lead with a total of 287 (-1).
The Cardinals managed five birdies on the day with Horton leading the way with a pair. Earley, Cleary, and Ventresca each had one birdie. All five of the Cardinal birdies came on par fives with two coming on hole eight (475 yards), two coming on hole 12 (498 yards), and one coming on hole one (508 yards).
