Catholic Races Three Boats at Season's Opener Navy Day Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Catholic men's rowing traveled to compete in the Navy Day regatta for its first race of the season. The Cardinals had two boats in the Men's Collegiate 8+ and one in the Men's Collegiate 4+ event on the Schuylkill River.

Catholic's A variety eight boat of Matthew Blomgren (coxswain), Jonah Stofko (stroke), David Fritz (7), Ryan Lewis (6), Sean Morgenstern (5), Paul O'Connor (4), Samuel Griffith (3), Mason Zajac (2) and Caleb Gascoyne (bow) finished 23rd overall with a time of 15:09.45. They just edged out Navy's B boat, who clocked a 15:12.60.

Catholic's B varsity eight boat of Aileen Farrelly (coxswain), Jack Koubek (stroke), Timothy Kling (7), Roman Smith (6), Andrew Palmer (5), Alexander Canada (4), Charles Moran (3), Luis Piñero (2) and Sean Farrelly (bow) finished 25th overall with a time of 15:31.14. They beat out Stockton by over 30 seconds.

Two boats from Penn and Georgetown's C boat took the top three spots in the event, all finishing in under 13 minutes. 

The varsity four boat of David Bernardo (coxswain), Thomas Robertson (stroke), Bryce Wnek (3), Kyle Ivey (2), and Alan Nicholas (bow) finished in 13th place with a time of 17:08.76. 

La Salle had all three of their boats place within the top five of the event, but it was Temple who took first with a time of 13:55.10. 

The Cardinals have a week off before returning to competition at the Head of the Schuylkill on October 26.
