ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Catholic University men's swimming and diving team picked up their first win of the season after defeating Elizabethtown 190-72 on Saturday afternoon. The victory was a team effort with 13 first-place finishes, four swimmers recording season bests, and two swimmers recording personal bests.
The Cardinals were led by the stellar trio of
John Holler, Jackson Hicks, and
Nathan Ober, each of whom finished first in all four of their events. Holler earned his blue ribbons in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, and 200-yard freestyle relay. Hicks won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard Individual Medley, and the 400-yard medley relay. His Individual Medley time tied his season best at 2:03.68. Ober snagged a victory in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke in addition to contributing in the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay.
Aiden Miller and
Shawn Mashburn joined the win column by securing top finishes in freestyle events. Miller was successful in the short-distance sprints, completing the 50-yard freestyle in 23.10 and taking second, just behind Holler, in the 100-yard freestyle with a 50.46. Mashburn took over the long-distance event, outpacing his competitors in the 500-yard freestyle to clock a 4:58.45.
Sean Kelty and
Tristan Burrola each picked up a pair of wins on the day as well. Kelty swam the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:20.89 to arrive at the wall five seconds before any of his opponents. Burrola joined Kelty in the 400-medley relay and earned another victory in the 200-freestyle relay.
Gavin Stearn also earned a win with the 200-yard freestyle relay team.
The Cardinals have also steadily improved their times throughout the season.
Jack Falcon improved his best 100-yard backstroke time to finish in 1:05.02. He also dropped time in the 100-yard freestyle to record a season-best 53.30.
Paul Lacava had a personal best time, notching a 23.61 in the 50-yard freestyle.
Matthew Williams shaved milliseconds off his100-yard freestyle time and
Michael Coppola dropped time in the 1000-yard freestyle to clock season bests.
Catholic will look to add to their winning streak as they travel to Loyola (Md.) for a two-day meet starting on Friday, December 1.
