Cards Ready to Host Drew in Landmark Conference Semifinal

| By:

WASHINGTON, D.C. —
The Catholic University men's soccer team will return to postseason action on Thursday for the first time since last year's historic NCAA Sweet Sixteen match when the Cardinals welcome Drew to Carlini Field.

Catholic is the top seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament after securing a huge win over Juniata on Saturday. With Lycoming dropping points to Elizabethtown after a goalless draw, the Cardinals equaled the Warriors at 7-0-2 and claimed the top spot via tie-breaking procedure. This marks the fourth-straight season in which Travis Beauchamp 's team has entered the tournament as the top seed.

Drew enters the match on the back of a dominant win over Moravian in the Landmark Conference Quarterfinal in which James Cahill netted a brace. Drew put 15 shots on target in the comfortable 3-0 victory.

Catholic will look to emulate the regular season match-up between the two sides that was also played on Carlini Field. Gordie Bernlohr scored just 47 second into the match, and after Drew equalized in the 14th minute, goals from Domenico Caltabiano and Maxim Pencak carried Beauchamp's side to victory.

The match-up will feature the conference's two top attacking teams as Drew averages 2.26 goals per game and has scored a conference-best 43 goals. Drew earned 112 corners to Catholic's 111.

It's been a strong season for the Cardinals in the attacking third as well as the squad averages just over two goals per contest (2.06) and has taken on 316 shots, over 40 more than second-most in the conference. Catholic did drop six matches to non-conference opponents but four of those came against teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches weekly poll.

Two-time All-Landmark Conference First Team selection Bernlohr leads the line for the Cardinals. His 12 goals are the most in a single season in his Catholic career and have him atop the Landmark Conference scoring charts. The senior has netted an impressive four braces this year and his nine goals against conference opponents is also the top mark in the Landmark.

Bernlohr's 29 career goals is fourth all-time in Catholic's DIII program history while his 13 career assists put him fifth on the chart. His 42 goal contributions currently has him tied for the all-time program record with two-time Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year and recent graduate Darius Siahpoosh. Catholic's offense is not one-dimensional by any means though as Ryan Kelly, Caltabiano and Bernlohr each have registered four assists while 18 total Cardinals have contributed a goal.

Drew's attack is led by Kevin Kiernan who leads the conference with 19 total goal contributions. His 11 assists are also the most in the conference while Tyson Christian has scored seven times and Cahill five. This year's Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year award is a two-horse race between Bernlohr and Kiernan.

New arrival Mudi Jagha has slotted seamlessly into the backline, starting every match prior to the regular season finale. Owen Maher, who has played the most minutes of any outfield player this season, and Jacksonville transfer Pencak have also been mainstays in defense as Catholic have shifted between four and five in the back throughout the season. Liam Giblin and Andrew Lowman are also vital to Catholic's success. Both players can feature as traditional outside backs in a back four or shift to wingbacks in a back five, and are extremely attack-minded regardless of formation or defined role. Lowman has one goal and two assists to his name

Freshman Owen Allegro has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper since arriving on campus in August. He has started all but one match, making 48 saves and maintaining a goals-against-average just above one (1.17). He has kept five clean sheets and is known for his quality play with his feet and distribution.

Drew have seen two goalkeepers features at similar rates this season. Jacob Anvi earned one of his nine starts in the regular season match against Catholic but recently its been Brandon Jachera in between the sticks for the Rangers. He made three saves and kept his third clean sheet of the season in the quarterfinal victory.

Kickoff in the semifinal match is set for 4 p.m. with a ticket to Saturday's championship on the line.
