Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's tennis team continued their unbeaten start to the season on Friday afternoon, taking down Stevenson 7-2.
Catholic earned wins in two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches.
The No. 1 doubles paring of
James Earwood and
Diego Romo worked well together and earned a late break of serve. They picked up the win with a final score of 8-6. Likewise, the No. 2 duo of
Matt Rudolf and
Henry Ogden battled early and served out the final game of their set to win 8-6.Â
Earwood continued his impressive day at No. 1 singles. He landed powerful serves and hustled on key plays to make a challenging opponent struggle and come away on top 6-3, 6-2.Â
At No. 2 singles, Romo earned crucial points down the stretch to fight off a comeback from his opponent. He saved a set point in the second set before winning in a tiebreak 6-2, 7-6.Â
Rudolf played in the No. 3 singles slot and had competitive points to start his match. He mastered his forehand after a few points and cruised to a 7-5, 6-2 victory.Â
Rookie
Drew Andrianopoulos and Ogden were also big for the Cardinals, coming away with wins after three sets. Andrianopoulos won his first set 6-3 before falling 2-6 in the second. The match went into extras with Andrianopoulos winning 12-10. Ogden also won the first and lost the second before prevailing in a dominant third set tiebreaker performance.
Leyton Ramos-Platt made a valiant comeback to win in a first set tiebreaker after being down 1-4 but could not pull it out in the third. He finished 7-6, 1-6, 5-10.Â
Catholic will look to keep its momentum into tomorrow when they host Harford Community College in a Saturday afternoon match starting at 2 pm.
