Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Angelo Petruccy

Catholic Hop Lycoming, Earn Share of Conference Title and No. 1 Seed in Landmark Tournament

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — The Catholic University men's soccer team flew past Juniata in its final match of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, downing the Eagles comprehensively.

It was a massive day for Travis Beauchamp's side as the Cardinal rode another Gordie Bernlohr brace to a share of the Landmark Conference regular-season title. With Elizabethtown holding Lycoming to a goalless draw, Catholic pulled even with the Warriors at 7-0-2 and earned the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament via multiple levels of tie-breaking procedure.

It took Bernlohr 25 minutes to break the deadline but the impressive senior did it stunning style.

It came following a strong run of Cardinal possession. After Catholic moved the ball from side to side effectively, Owen Maher, forward from his center back position, found Bernlohr just inside the penalty area.

The senior received the ball with his back to goal, utilizing brilliant close control to turn and get a shot away. He touched the ball onto his chest before using his right foot to juggle for a third touch, popping the ball up just enough to swivel and unleash a purely-struck volley into the upper corner. A truly incredible goal.

He wasn't done yet as he doubled Catholic's advantage in the 52nd minute. Domenico Caltabiano slipped Bernlohr in and at that point the Catholic talisman was always favored to score, slotting a low shot off the far post and in.

At that point it was very comfortable for the Cardinals but they continued to push forward for more. Just five minutes later, reigning Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week Ryan Kelly got in on the act.

The junior stepped up after Bernlohr drew a foul roughly 27 yards from the Eagle goal in a central position. Kelly bent a stellar right-footed strike over a five-man Juniata wall and in under the cross to convert directly from the dead ball for his fourth goal of the season.

Catholic added a fourth late on when Lorenzo Carletti found the back of the net. Michael Gaughan played a key role in the build up, whipping in a cross from the left before Michael Cafiero got a telling touch to redirect the cross to Carletti. The junior then took one touch to control before firing toward the Eagle goal. His strike took a slight deflection and found its way in as the Juniata goalkeeper was unsighted.

Every available outfield player for Catholic saw game action in the match. Mudi Jagha was a notable absentee as he was forced to miss the match due to yellow card accumulation but will be eligible for return in Catholic's conference semifinal match.

The brace for Bernlohr marks his fourth of the season. He finishes the season atop the Landmark Conference scoring charts with 12 goals, two more than his next closest challenger.

The Cardinals secured a first-round bye in the conference tournament so they will await the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal match between Moravian and Drew. Catholic will host the winner of the affair on Thursday at a time that will be set in the near future.
