Bernlohr's Third Brace of Season Sees Catholic Past Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Behind two goals from leading scorer Gordie Bernlohr, the Catholic University men's soccer team defeated Wilkes on Saturday to remain unbeaten in Landmark Conference play.

Catholic continued its trend of lightning-quick starts as Bernlohr scored just 96 seconds into the match to push the Cardinals ahead.

Mudi Jagha picked up the ball in his center back position and found Bernlohr around midfield. The senior faced up his defender, running at pace down the left channel before unleashing a right-footed strike from the top of the penalty area. Bernlohr's effort was inch-perfect, curling inside the far post to push his team ahead. This marks the fourth time this season that Catholic has scored inside the opening two minutes.

The attacking midfielder struck again in the 26th minute when great play in the midfield sprung Bernlohr free.

Domenico Caltabiano found Ryan Kelly roughly 30 yards from goal, who produced a brilliant one-touch dink over the Wilkes backline. Bernlohr, who was playing just on the back of the two center backs, raced onto it, rounded the goalkeeper and finished from a tight angle for his team-best 10th goal of the season.

Wilkes pulled one back in the 39th minute to apply some pressure to the Cardinals as the teams entered halftime, but It didn't take long for the Cardinals to restore their two-goal advantage.

Three minutes after the interval, Catholic broke down the Colonel defense again. Intricate passing on the left from Bernlohr and Andrew Lowman opened Caltabiano to put a dangerous cross into the area. His service found Kelly whose shot was saved by Nick Kinzler, but the rebound fell to Ryan Bradby who blasted in for his first goal of the season.

Caltabiano got in on the act in the 58th minute when the junior was rewarded for his high work rate. He intercepted a poor ball from the back and found Kelly, who picked him out on a beautiful one-two before Caltabiano made no mistake to put the game beyond any doubt.

With his two assists, Kelly has now posted multiple goal contributions in back-to-back matches.

With the victory, Catholic moves to 6-0-2 in conference play and remains in second behind Lycoming. The Cardinals will look to take care of business next Saturday against Juniata and hope that Elizabethtown can get a result against the Warriors for a chance at the No. 1 seed.

Catholic will travel to Mary Washington for a midweek match against the No. 2 ranked team in the country on Wednesday. Kickoff in Fredericksburg is set for 3:30 p.m.
