WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's tennis team wrapped up the fall season with a 5-4 win against Stevenson on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals will enter the spring with a 4-2 record.
The match was originally scheduled for September 17 but was postponed to today due to inclement weather.
Veterans
Jane Krukiel and
Marissa Stambaugh put Catholic in the lead early with a dominant performance at No. 3 doubles. They were in sync from start to finish and beat their opponents 8-2.
Paige Brightwell and reigning Lankmark Conference Athlete of the Week,
Meaghan Laniewski, collected the second point for the Cardinals at No. 2 doubles. They jumped to an early lead and fought off a comeback from the Mustangs to win 8-4.
The No. 1 doubles combo of
Ava Niggemeier and
Mairead O'Hara fell to a powerful Mustangs duo but both bounced back in their singles matches. O'Hara only dropped one game over two sets, winning 6-1, 6-0. Niggemeier was locked in a 3-3 tie but quickly found her game and finished it out 6-3, 6-1.
Stambaugh closed out the day with a match-winning singles victory. She won the first set easily but her opponent came back strong and won a second set tiebreak. The senior stayed poised and clinched the match in a third-set tiebreaker 10-4.
Catholic will now look to prepare for the spring and the start of Landmark Conference competition.
