Catholic Drops First Landmark Conference Meet of the Season

MADISON, N.J. -  The Catholic University men's swimming and diving team fell to Drew in their first Landmark Conference meet of the season. The Rangers scored 167 points to the Cardinal's 126.  

Two freshmen took wins early for the Cardinals. Sean Kelty started things in event three, the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:00.80. He finished six seconds faster than the next closed competition. Teddy Tsakumis followed it up with a 1 second victory in event 8, the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 55.45. He also touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of  2:03.88.

Senior Nathan Ober was the next to win nine points in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 58.38. Junior Jackson Hicks was right behind him coming in at 1:00.83. This duo also went one-two in the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 2:12.73 and 2:13.14 respectively. 

Sophomore Daniel Green also had a good day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. He recorded a time of 1:47.11, just over one second behind the top-place finisher. Likewise, rookie John Holler came in second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.88. 

On the diving side, sophomores Charles Connolly III and Jack Walsh topped Drew in both the 1-meter and 3-meter event. Connolly scored 234.15 points in his 1-meter dive and Walsh scored 182.5 points. The Rangers did not have any divers compete from the 3-meter board, but 1 Connolly was able to grab 197.80 points and Walsh was right behind him with a 173.40 point performance. 

Catholic and Drew have built a strong rivalry over the past few seasons. Last year, the Cardinals lost to the Rangers by a single point, 145.5 to 146.5. 

Catholic has a week off from competition before traveling to Scranton on Saturday, October 28 to take on the Royals. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
