GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Catholic University women's swimming & diving team fell to Gettysburg 204-58 on Sunday afternoon in the team's first meet in the new year.
The Cardinals competed against a perennial powerhouse in Gettysburg after their annual training trip to Florida and gave some impressive individual swims.
The Cards placed third in the meet's first event, the 200-medley relay, as Megan Leibfreid, Madeline Doucette, Emily Tighe, and Caroline Beal combined for a 1:56.68 time.
Sophomore Kelly Smith earned three points in the 1000-freestyle distance event with a time of 11:33.54.
Beal and freshman Alexa Hipp combined for seven total points in the 100-backstroke event. Beal took second place at 1:03.38, followed closely by Hipp in third at 1:03.87.
Doucette earned points again with a third place finish in the 100-breaststroke at 1:11.05. Leibfreid contributed again in the 50-freestyle sprint event with a third-place time of 26.39.
Sophomore Kate Von Heeringen (58.50) touched third in the 100-freestyle for three points. Hipp added another third place finish in the 200-backstroke at 2:20.83.
Freshman Claire Laux finished third at 5:41.95 in the 500-freestyle.
Junior Grace Smith swam second in the 100-butterfly for four points at 1:05.36. Cagney Boyle touched third in the 200-individual medley at 2:22.30.
The Cardinals closed the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-freestyle relay as Leibfreid, Emma Gould, Hipp, and Beal teamed up for a time of 1:46.43.
The team stays on the road in its next meet against Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Cardinals compete against the Yellow Jackets for a second time this season after the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Nov. 23-24, 2019.
