Cardinals Touch First in Every Event, Defeat Gophers 208-52

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Catholic University women's swimming & diving team handled Landmark Conference foe Goucher in a 208-52 dual meet victory on Saturday afternoon at the Von Berries Aquatic Center. 

The Cardinals took first place in every single event in the meet and swept the top three spots in five events for the team's third meet victory of the season. The Cards got things started right away in the 200-medley relay to pick up 15 points in the meet's first event. 

Emily Earley (31.05), Hannah Corcoran (34.30), Grace Smith (28.61), and Megan Leibfreid (25.71) combined for a winning time of 1:59.67. A second Cardinal foursome consisting of Jacquelyn Kilcommons, Madeline Doucette, Kayla Ruffo, and Kelly Smith followed for second place with a 2:00.61 time.  

Elizabeth Spernal touched first in the 1000-freestyle distance event with an 11:45.24 winning time, and her teammate Kate Von Heeringen followed in second at 11:50.07. Then the Cards took first and second in the 200-freestyle when Alexa Hipp (2:06.02) and Shannon Raue (2:12.33) took the top two spots for 13 points. 

Back-to-back sweeps came after that as Caroline Beal (1:02.58), Kelly Smith (1:04.69), and Earley (1:06.50) went one-two-three in the 100-backstroke. The next event saw Emma Gould touch first at 1:14.38, followed by Megan Lowell (1:15.41) and Corcoran (1:16.37)

Cagney Boyle finished first in the 200-butterfly at 2:28.34 and her teammate Molly Donnellan collected four points in second at 2:35.56. Then Lebfreid took first again in the 50-freestyle sprint event with the winning time of 26.49.

The Cardinals went one-two in the 200-backstroke as Emily Tighe (2:20.64) and Colleen McDonald (2:22.28) grabbed 13 points in the event. Doucette followed with a win in the 200-breaststroke that beat the next best finisher by more than seven seconds, as Ally Noccioli and Aubrey McDonough took second and third. 

In the 500-freestyle, freshman Claire Laux touched first at 5:39.50, followed by her first year teammate Scarlett Golden at 5:42.12. Ruffo then won the 100-butterfly at 1:07.08.

Lowell (2:22.90), Grace Smith (2:29.01), and Noccioli (2:29.86) took the top three spots in the 200-IM for 16 points. 

Catholic ended the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-freestyle relay as Doucette, Leibfreid, Von Heeringen, and Beal teamed up to win at 1:46.57. 

The Cardinals will compete next in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24.
