Cardinals Split in First Landmark Weekend, Move to 3-1

SCRANTON, Pa. - In its first weekend of Landark Conference action, the Catholic University women's swimming & diving team moved to 3-1 on the year with a win over Marywood (191-102) on Friday and a narrow loss to Scranton (127-135) on Saturday.

The women opened up Friday's meet at Marywood with a one-two finish in the 200-medley relay to earn 15 points right away. Rachael Zarlinski (30.34), Aubrey McDonough (32.87), Grace Smith (28.18), and Megan Leibfreid (25.90) took first with a time of 1:57.29. 

Freshman Kelly Smith followed with a win in the 1000-freestyle (11:38.64). Smith added first-place finishes in the 500-freestyle and another 1000-freestyle the next day against Scranton. 

Emily Tighe did her part with two wins against the Pacers in the 200-freestyle (2:06.70) and 200-backstroke (2:22.05). 

Sophomore Morgan James (25.94), Leibfreid (26.34), and McDonough (27.11) swept the top three spots in the 50-freestyle sprint. The Cardinals swept in the very next event, the 100-freestyle, when Angela Castano, Caroline Beal, and Kathryn Degnan went one-two-three. 

Catholic closed the meet taking the top two spots in the 400-freestyle relay to cement the victory over Marywood. Freshman Kate Von Heeringen combined with Castano, Leibfreid, and Degnan for a winning time of 3:54.62.

The tightly-contested Scranton meet came down the wire, with the Royals taking first in the final event, the 200-freestyle relay. Morgan, Leibfreid, Castano, and Beal finished just more than a second behind with a time of 1:42.49.

Senior Emily Messina took first in the 200-butterfly with a 2:24.72 time on Saturday. 

On the boards, sophomore Colleen O'Callaghan finished third on the 1-meter (125.25) and second on the 3-meter with a diving score of 128.85 against Marywood.  

The team is back in action for a Landmark meet on the road against Elizabethtown on Saturday, November 10 at 1 p.m.
