Men's Swimming & Diving Defeat Salisbury for First Meet Win

SALISBURY, Md. - The Catholic University men's swimming & diving team earned its first meet win of the year Saturday afternoon on the road against the Salisbury Sea Gulls, 165-89.

Five different swimmers took first place in at least two events to propel the men to a solid road victory in its second meet of the year. The Cardinals set the pace in the first race, as Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores, Chris Grunbok, Kevin Jay, and Matthew Mahon teamed up to win the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:51.63.

Shcriefer-Flores had the standout performance of the meet. The freshman won first place in all four events he competed in, two of which were relays. The Lexington, Ky. swimmer took first in the 100-meter freestyle (55.11), 50-meter backstroke (28.84), and swam second in the 400-meter freestyle relay win in addition to the 200 medley relay victory.

Sophomore Gregory McCarthy and senior Sam Hicks took first and second soon after in the the 200-meter freestyle with times of 2:02.56 and 2:04.77 respectively. McCarthy swam the 100-meter butterfly in exactly 1:00.00 for a first place finish as well.

Daniel Taylor adds his name to the impressive freshmen on head Coach Paul Waas' team. Taylor took first place in the 50-meter breaststroke (31.41) and swam in the winning 400-meter medley relay to end the meet.

Luke Nicholson (2:15.72), David Lanetti (2:22.59), and Jay swept first, second, and third in the 200-meter butterfly. Jay added a first place finish (2:23.30) in the 200-meter individual medley as well. 

Just as they opened, the Cardinals closed with an event victory in the 400-meter freestyle relay. Taylor, Schriefer-Flores, Hicks, and Mahon (3:43.43) swam seven seconds faster than the next finisher to earn all 11 points. 

The team is back in action for a Landmark meet on the road against Marywood on Friday, October 26 at 6 p.m.
