WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University women's basketball freshman Samantha McCarter scored a team-high 20 points in her collegiate debut as the Cardinals posted an impressive 92-68 victory over Anna Maria Sunday on Franny Murray Court in the season opener for both teams.
Catholic (1-0) posted its highest point total since a 93-62 victory at Susquehanna on Jan. 25, 2017. The Cardinals led for all but 3:13 and had four players in double figure scoring. McCarter was 8-fo-12 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. She also added four assists.
Senior Sydney Poindexter totaled 17 points to go along wih six rebounds, four assists and four steals while freshman Rachel Bussanich had 11 points and sophomore Luca Mamula added 10 in just 15 minutes.
The Cards led 27-15 following the first quarter after outscoring the Amcats 14-2 over the final 2:53. Poindexter had nine points, two rebounds, three assists and steals in the opening 10 minutes.
Seven different players scored at least two points in the second quarter as Catholic took a 46-35 lead into halftime.
Anna Maria (0-1) cut its deficit to nine, 54-45, with 5:05 remaining in the third before a 12-4 run by the Cardinals pushed their lead to 17 after three, 66-49.
McCarter scored seven points in the fourth, going 3-for-4 from the floor as Catholic was 11-for-20 as a team.
A total of 10 different players scored at least three points for the Cardinals who improved to 8-4 in home openers under head coach Matt Donohue. They also had 10 players register at least one steals as they scored 32 points off of 28 Amcat turnovers.
Led by McCarter and Bussanich, Catholic scored 48 points off the bench and 50 in the paint.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Nov. 15 against Kenyon in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by York College of Pennsylvania. Tipoff s at 7:30 p.m.
