TOWSON, Md. - Catholic University women's basketball freshman Luca Mamula was named Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week on Monday after averaging 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals in two Landmark Conference victories last week.
This is the first weekly honor for Mamula and second-straight for the Cardinals after junior Sydney Poindexter was named athlete of the week last Monday.
Mamula scored a career-high 28 points while adding five rebounds and four assists as the Cards led from start to finish in a convincing 83-58 victory over Goucher Wednesday which was also the 200th win for head coach Matt Donohue at Catholic. She scored 13 points in the opening half, going 6-of-6 from the floor in 11 minutes as the Cardinals built a 17-point halftime lead.
Mamula finished just shy of totaling the first 30-point game by a Cardinal since Michelle DeSantis had 36 in an 89-71 win over Juniata on Jan. 28, 2017.
On Saturday, Mamula pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds, just missing her first career double double with eight points as Catholic held Moravian to just 19 percent shooting while forcing 22 turnovers and totaling 17 steals in limiting the Greyhounds to its lowest point total in 20 years with a 62-38 win.
The Cardinals return to action Wednesday when they host Elizabethtown at Franny Murray Court. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. Sophomore Cristin George scored a career-high 16 points off the bench, but Catholic could not overcome an eight-point first quarter deficit en route to a 75-64 loss at Elizabethtown on January 16.
