Cardinals Take Second in Yellow Jacket Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. - With 1294 points, the Catholic University men's swim team finished second place out of 12 competing teams in the 2019 Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational after two days of swimming at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.

The Cardinals had the best finish out of the eleven division III schools, besting Randolph-Macon (903, third place) by 391 points, Washington College (853 - fourth place), and Lynchburg (729 - fifth place). Division II Barton College took the top spot in the invitational, winning with 1969 points. 

The men got off to a strong start Saturday morning, grabbing second place in the 200-freestyle relay event. George Isaacs (22.07), Matthew Mahon (21.71), Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores (21.27), and Kevin Jay (21.58) teamed up for a 1:26.63 time for second out of 21 relay teams. 

Freshman Ellis Prescott impressed once again in the distance events, finishing fourth in the 500-freestyle out of 44 swimmers with a time of 4:50.14. Mahon finished eleventh at 4:57.68.

Gregory McCarthy swam the second-best time out of 40 competitors in the 200-individual medley at 1:57.02, one of just three swimmers to finish in under two minutes. Jay finished in tenth at 2:03.22.

Catholic placed two swimmers in the top ten of the 50-freestyle sprint event as well, as Schriefer-Flores (21.72) finished third and Isaacs touched ninth at 22.30 out of 52 total swimmers. 

The Cardinals took fourth in the 400-medley relay at 3:35.72 thanks to a foursome consisting of Schriefer-Flores, Chris Grunbok, McCarthy, and Mahon. Then Schriefer-Flores, Grunbok, Jay, and Isaacs finished in third in the 200-medley at 1:38.02.

Prescott beat everyone in the 400-individual medley to earn 32 points. His 4:13.32 time was the fastest out of 18 swimmers in the event. McCarthy and Jay took top-ten finishes again in the 100-butterfly as McCarthy finished second (52.87) and Jay in sixth (53.52).

Three Cardinals finished in the top ten in the 200-freestyle as Mahon (1:47.01) took sixth, Luke Nicholson took eighth (1:50.03), and Lenny Brown (1:51.59) finished ninth. Grunbok picked up points with a fifth-place finish in the 100-breaststroke at 1:01.74.

Schriefer-Flores continued his strong weekend with a seventh-place finish in the 100-backstroke out of 38 swimmers at 54.91. Teammate Joshua Roberts finished tenth at 56.28.

Prescott, McCarthy, Nicholson, and Mahon combined for a 7:17.18 time in the 800-freestyle relay, good for third place. Prescott then earned points at the 1650-freestyle with the fifth-best time at 17:04.24.

Schriefer-Flores (1:57.40) and Roberts (1:59.85) performed well in the 200-backstroke for fourth and seventh place finishes, respectively. Mahon then took third overall out of 44 swimmers with his 48.22 time in the 100-freestyle. 

Grunbok had another impressive performance to earn points in the 200-breaststroke with his sixth-place finish at 2:16.68. McCarthy gave another second-place individual effort in the 200-butterfly at 1:55.95, followed by teammate Nicholson in eighth place at 2:02.28.

The Cardinals finished the meet as they started it with a second-place relay finish in the 400-freestyle relay event. Schriefer-Flores, Mahon, Isaacs, and Jay teamed up for a 3:14.53 relay time. 

Catholic is back in action on Saturday, December 7 for a home meet against St. Mary's (Md.). Meet time at the DuFour Center Pool is set for 1 p.m.
