Cardinals Tabbed to Repeat as Landmark Champions

TOWSON, Md. - The three-time reigning Landmark Conference champion Catholic University Men's Swimming & Diving team is the No. 1-ranked team in the 2019-20 conference preseason coaches' poll, as announced by the league Tuesday morning.

The Cardinals received six first-place votes to earn 60 points in the poll while Susquehanna trailed in second place with 46 points. It is the third time in program history that the Cards have earned the No. 1 spot.

Catholic ran away with the Landmark Conference title for the third consecutive year in February with a final score of 867 points. The Cardinals topped the meet by 243 points with Susquehanna earning second (624) and Scranton taking third (612.5).

Many of head Coach Paul Waas' standout swimmers return to the pool to defend their conference title. The 2018-19 men's swimming and diving coach of the year welcomes back several medalwinners as well as three newcomers to this year's squad.

Two-time Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Year Gregory McCarthy returns after a couple of dominant seasons for the Cardinals. He will be joined by fellow junior standouts Matthew Mahon and James Verby, who both won multiple gold medals in last year's championships. In total, six All-Landmark honorees return to the pool for Catholic.

The Cards start their season on the road against Landmark foe Drew on Saturday, October 19. Catholic will host a total of five meets this upcoming season, including conference dual meets against Scranton and Elizabethtown to follow the Drew meet.

The team participates in the annual Yellow Jacket Midseason Invitational on November 23-24. The Cardinals also compete against Division I Howard University (Jan. 26).

The final tune-up meet before conference championships will be at the DuFour Pool on Feb. 1 when Catholic hosts local opponent Marymount (Va.).

The Landmark Conference Championships are set for February 14-16.
