TOWSON, Md. - Junior goalkeeper Jack Long of the Catholic University men's soccer team has been named Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Long earned two shutout wins last week for Catholic, a squad in the midst of a five-game win streak that has not allowed a goal in a span of 451:22.
In a 4-0 victory over Randolph-Macon, Long made four important saves in the first half, including a penalty kick denial in the 8th minute. With the match still scoreless, the Manasquan, N.J. native blocked another point-blank shot with his legs to keep it out of goal later on in the 12th minute.
After the five-save shutout against the Yellow Jackets, Long followed with a four-save clean sheet on the road against Dickinson in a 1-0 Catholic win.
He added nine saves and two wins last week, giving him four wins (all shutouts) and 20 saves on the year.
Long is the first Cardinal to receive the conference honor since Ben Alexander was named athlete of the week on October 22, 2018, and the first Catholic goalkeeper to earn the accolade since Zachery Tashjy on October 30, 2017.
The Cardinals return home for their next match on Wednesday, September 18 against Mary Washington. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
