FREDERICK, Md. - Catholic University men's basketball senior Riley Hayes totaled 21 points and a career-high 20 rebounds, but the Cardinals shot just 25.7 percent from the floor in a 65-49 loss to St. Mary's (Md.) Friday at Hood's BB&T Arena in the Battle of D.C. & Maryland.
The Cardinals (0-2) were just 18-of-70 from the floor, including 6-of-32 from three-point range. Their 70 field goal attempts were the most since they were 38-of-79 in a 96-69 victory at Gallaudet on Nov. 18, 2018.
The Cards' 32 three-point attempts were their most since they were 11-of-34 in a 90-64 win over Goucher at home on Jan. 17, 2018.
Meanwhile, Hayes is just the fourth player in program history and first since 1963 to total 20 rebounds in a game.
After trailing 31-22 at haltime, Catholic opened the second half on a 16-8 run and trailed by just one following a three-pointer by senior Thomas Huerter with 15:04 remaining.
However, that would be the last field goal for the Cardinals until a layup by Hayes with 7:51 left cut their deficit to 10, 51-41. During the Seahawks' 12-3 run, Catholic missed 11 consecutive field goal attempts while committing seven turnovers.
The Cardinals, who were 11-of-38 from the floor in the second half, made just five of their final 26 attempts over the final 15 minutes.
Hayes totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds in the second half while going 5-for-10 from the field. Huerter and sophomore Will Turgeon added six points apiece.
Catholic trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, 19-8, before Hayes hit two free throws to cut the team's deficit to 19-10 with 10:27 remaining.
That would be the Cards' last basket until a three-pointer by senior Collin Hartmann with 5:00 remaining. Despite going 0-for-7 from the floor, including 0-for-5 three-point range prior to that, Catholic only allowed four points before Hartmann pulled the team within 10, 23-13.
The Cardinals' starters accounted for all but five points and five rebounds. Hartmann finished with nine points, five assists and three rebounds. Huerter had six points and eight rebounds.
Catholic will face Gallaudet in the consolation game on Saturday as the Bison fell to host Hood in Friday's second contest, 73-66. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
