MADISON, N.J. - The Catholic University field hockey team defeated Drew 7-0 in a Landmark Conference contest on Saturday at Ranger Stadium.
The Cardinals (5-6) got off to a strong start, scoring the first goal and game-winner in the second minute of play by senior Alexandra DiFlorio.
Just a few minutes later, sophomore Vene Richardson-Powell scored her first career goal off a rebound from behind the goalkeeper, making the score 2-0 at the half.
DiFlorio scored again in the third quarter when she finished a cross from sophomore Hannah Bateman before Catholic ended the third quarter up 4-0 after senior Katie Anderson converted a pass from freshman forward Madeline Garcia.
Catholic continued its strong offensive performance in the fourth quarter after Anderson scored her second goal of the day off another assist by Bateman from just inside the circle.
With five minutes remaining, junior Meghan Shallow knocked the Cards' sixth goal in with a third assist from Bateman. Just a minute later, Garcia scored her first career goal off a pass from Bateman to provide the final margin.
Catholic outshot Drew, 27-7, while freshman Maeve McCarthy notched her fist career win with a career-high four saves.
The Cardinals travel to Manheim, Pa., on Wednesday, Oct. 9 to take on No. 7 Franklin & Marshall beginning at 7 p.m.
