Morrill, Martinez Lead Cardinals to Split at Route 42 Classic

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Catholic University volleyball freshman Josephine Morrill totaled 32 kills and 23 digs in her first two career matches as the Cardinals split matches against Meredith and Mary Baldwin Friday at the Route 42 Classic.

The Cardinals (1-1) have opened their season at the Route 42 Classic in each of the last three seasons and have won nine of their 10 matches.

Returning All-Landmark Conference First Team selection, junior Patricia Martinez, added 26 kills and 14 digs, posting 13 kills and seven digs in each match.

Meredith 3, Catholic 1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-22, 25-20) 

Morrill posted a match-high 17 kills, but the Cardinals had 12 attack errors and a .112 hitting percentage over the final two sets in a 3-1 loss to Meredith Friday at the Route 42 Classic hosted by Eastern Mennonite.

Morrill hit .2019 while adding eight digs and two block assists while Martinez had 13 kills, seven digs and two block assists. She also posted a .237 hitting percentage.

The Avenging Angels, who went 23-5 a year ago and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second time in the last three years, jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set and never trailed en route to a 25-19 victory.

Led by eight kills from Morrill, Catholic used a 7-0 run late in the second set to post a 25-18 win. With the set tied at 17-17, Morrill posted three kills while the Cardinals took advantage of three Meredith errors to score seven consecutive points and take a 24-17 advantage.

The third set featured six ties, the last at 10-10, before the Avenging Angels scored eight of the next 10 points, including four on Cardinal attack errors.

Catholic took a 13-8 to start the third set, but Meredith scored nine of the next 12, including six on Catholic errors, to take a 17-16 lead. The match was tied at 19-19 before three-straight kills by the Avenging Angels and a Cardinal attack error put Meredith in front, 23-19. After a service error pulled the Cards within three, a kill and back-to-back service aces gave the Avenging Angels a 25-20 fourth-set and match clinching victory.

Sophomore Caroline Kelly had 16 digs while junior Maria Gonzalez totaled 33 assists and 15 digs. Junior Kate Murphy added 10 digs.

Catholic 3, Mary Baldwin 0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-18)

Morrill led the offense for the second-straight match, posting a match-high 15 kills while posting a .297 hitting percentage. She also added a career-high 15 digs to record her first career double double.

Led by six errors by the Fighting Squirrels, the Cardinals jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first set before Mary Baldwin used a 13-3 rally to take a 17-14 lead. MBU pushed its lead to 21-16, but led by five kills from Martinez, Catholic scored the final nine points with eight coming off kills and the ninth on a service ace by Morrill to win 25-21.

The second set was tied at 3-3 and then 7-7 before the Cards used an 8-1 run, highlighted by four errors by the Fighting Squirels, to take a 15-8 advantage. Led by five more Mary Baldwin errors, Catholic scored 10 of the final 15 points en route to a 25-13 victory.

With the third set tied at 12-12, the Cardinals scored 13 of the final 19 points, including eight on kills by Morrill, to clinch the match with their first sweep of the season, 25-18.

Kelly finished with 27 digs while junior Christina Ciola added eight in her first match since 2017 after missing all of last season with an injury. Junior Joya Libbus had five kills while senior Nina Kasputis had five digs. 

The Cardinals conclude play in the Route 42 Classic on Sunday with matches against Lynchburg and host Bridgewater beginning at 2 p.m.
