NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Catholic University women's track and field team finished in seventh place overall at the DIII Invitational, hosted by NYU, on Friday.
Senior Andrea Galeano won the women's weight throw with the mark of 15.03m and placed seventh in the shot put (10.58m). Senior Kiera Lyons won gold in the 3000m with a 15 second personal record (10:25.84), which marks the fastest time in the Landmark Conference this season.
Lyons ran the last leg of the women's distance medley relay and was joined by freshman Paige Wilderotter, junior Grace Boras, and sophomore Victoria Carlini to capture silver with a time of 12:59.74. Their time marks the fastest in the Landmark Conference this season and the 15th fastest in the nation.
Wilderotter also placed seventh in the 3000m with a 35-second personal-record (10:53.93), while Carlini ran a 2:29.79 in the 800m to place in the top-25. In the women's weight throw, Rebecca Johnson throw 10.62m to place 14th, while freshman Abigail Walter placed 12th in the women's long jump (4.68m).
The women's 4x400m relay team of Boras, Carlini, freshman Olivia Fiore, and sophomore Natalie Troy placed 13th with a season personal record 4:25.07. Catholic's underclassman sprinters had a day for themselves in the 400m, setting three career-bests. Fiore led the way with the time of 1:06.04, followed by Anna Walcutt (1:06.77), and Christina Faber (1:09.86). Walcutt also ran a personal best of 30.09 in the 200m dash.
"This was a statement meet for the women," said Director Steve Rahn. "Although we were missing part of our roster since some had to attend class today, the team placed seventh out of about 40 Division III teams. The women's distance medley relay started us off on the right foot with a great performance behind a only NCAA qualifying team and finished with our best 4x400 relay of the year. In between, we had huge performances from Kiera in a comeback win in the 3k and Andrea in the weight throw. Others who stepped up with big performances included Paige in the 3k, Grace Boras in the relays, Anna Walcutt with 2 big PRs, Abigail Walter in the long jump, and the list could go on. I'm even more impressed with the level of support they showed each other throughout the meet."
The Cardinals are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, February 10 at the Larry Sharp Memorial Invitational hosted by Hagerstown Community College.
