FAIRFAX, Va. - The Catholic University women's indoor track and field team had a strong performance at the Patriot Games, hosted by George Mason University, on Saturday.
The Cardinals were led by seniors, Andrea Galeano, and Kiera Lyons. Galeano earned silver in the women's weight throw with a mark of 15.55m, beating her mark that won gold in the Landmark Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships last year. While on the track, Lyons charted two top ten finishes. She finished fourth in the 3000m (10:40.01), and seventh in the mile run with a time of 5:20.88.
Catholic's young distance runners in freshman Paige Wilderotter and sophomore Tara Thornton recorded great times on track today as well. Wilderotter crossed the finish line in the 1000m meter with a time of 3:17.15, placing her in 14th, and Thorton finished in 17th out of 24 competitors with a time of 2:35.87 in the 800m.
"The women turned in another solid performance with 12 personal records coming from all event groups," said Director Steve Rahn. "We are still a very young team and to perform so well against bigger Division 1 schools, shows their progression mentally and physically."
Catholic will return to action on Friday, February 1 at the DIII Invitational hosted by NYU.
