HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Catholic University women's indoor track and field team had a strong performance on Saturday at the Holiday Meet hosted by Haverford College.
The Cardinals brought home two silver medals and a bronze. The first silver was earned by the women's 4x200m team of freshman Olivia Fiore, freshman Carlene Idone, freshman Vene Richardson-Powell, and sophomore Madeline Baker. They ran a time of 1:54.86. Senior Andrea Galeano earned the second silver of the day in the women's shot put with a personal record and a mark of 10.82m. Freshman Kathleen Hoban marked an 8.61m in the triple jump to bring home the bronze for Catholic. In addition to her bronze, Hoban also placed ninth in the long jump.
Fiore led the Cards with a 4.45m mark to place fifth in the long jump. She also tallied a top ten finish in the 4x400m relay with teammates sophomore Natalie Troy, sophomore Mackenzie Haley, and sophomore Victoria Carlini.
Catholic had another strong day in the 60m dash with three top ten finishers. Richardson-Powell placed in eighth with a time of 08.69. Following right behind was Idone to record a time of 08.77. Freshman Abigail Walter was the final Cardinal to finish in the top ten. Richardson-Powell also recorded an impressive performance in the 200m finishing in eighth.
Troy led the Catholic in the 60m hurdles, placing in tenth with a time of 10.88. Other top ten finishers included Mckenzie Haley and junior Sarah Diamond in the 400m, and senior Rebecca Johnson who placed seventh in the shot put with a mark of 9.24m.
The mid-distance runners also performed very well today. Senior Kiera Lyons recorded a fourth-place finish in the mile run and a ninth-place finish in the 800m. Carlini led the Cardinals in the 800m finishing in eighth place with a time of 2:31.90.
"Heading into the winter break, the women are in great shape," said Director Steve Rahn. "Andrea had a great first meet of the year with a PR in the shot, our women's sprinters had another great meet with a fast 4x2, and Vicky and Kiera performed very well in the mid-distance events especially for this point in the year. We'll use these first two successful meets to build onto when we return in January."
Catholic is not scheduled to return to action until Saturday, January 19 at the Collegeville Classic hosted by Ursinus College.
