TOWSON, Md. - The Catholic University Women's Swimming & Diving team tied for second place in the 2019-20 conference preseason coaches' poll, as announced by the league Wednesday morning.
The Cardinals received one first-place vote to earn 46 points in the poll. Susquehanna led with 58 points and five first-place votes, while Scranton also tied for second with 46 points.
Catholic rallied to take second place in the 2019 Landmark Conference Championships in February, finishing with 662 points. The Cardinals beat Scranton by one point (661) and finished behind the league champions, Susquehanna, who finished with 779 points.
Many of head coach Paul Waas' standout swimmers return to the pool to compete with nine-time conference champion Susquehanna. The team welcomes back several medalwinners as well as eleven newcomers to this year's squad.
Last year's Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year Angela Castano returns for the Cardinals for her sophomore season after placing in the top-10 in three events in the championship meet, including a school-record 50-free in 24.25 for a silver medal. Also returning to the pool is junior Caroline Beal after a Second Team All-Conference performance in the 100-back and collecting four total medals in last year's championships.
The Cards start their season on the road against Landmark foe Drew on Saturday, October 19. Catholic will host a total of five meets this upcoming season, including conference dual meets against Scranton and Elizabethtown to follow the Drew meet.
The team participates in the annual Yellow Jacket Midseason Invitational on November 23-24. The Cardinals also compete against Division I Howard University (Jan. 26).
The final tune-up meet before conference championships will be at the DuFour Pool on Feb. 1 when Catholic hosts local opponent Marymount (Va.).
The Landmark Conference Championships are set for February 14-16.
